Building education bridges - Occupational and social empowerment for those interested in voluntary return

The German Adult Education Association (Deutscher Volkshochschul-Verband e.V., DVV) offers a four-week education at ten adult educational centers nationwide for refugees who are seeking a new start in their countries of origin. During the occupational and craft training, the participants develop perspectives for the time after the homecoming and inform themselves about education or training opportunities in their country of origin. This supports professional and social reintegration.

The aim of the project is to build educational bridges and to enable a continuation of the training in the countries of origin. The four-week educational offer is geared to the strengths of the participants and the needs of the countries of origin. The courses are on a low level and without progression that entry and exit is possible at any time. The job-related content is adjusted in close consultation with the participants according to the different needs, so that the content can vary from location to location. However, the range of courses is mainly in the vocational craft sector and in the teaching of basic computer and accounting skills. Possible topics are: care, cooking, textile processing, German for tourism, IT, accounting, wood and metal work, electrical, renewable energy and agriculture. At the beginning of each educational offer, participants have the opportunity to participate in a strength analysis and to document their abilities. For this the "Strength Atlas" developed for the project is available. This helps not only participants to choose the right career and training goals, but also to strengthen their self-confidence. During the entire further training, the participants also have a coach available for individual psychosocial support. The training is currently offered in adult education centers at the following locations:
• Meppen County (Lower Saxony)
• District Kusel (Rhineland-Palatinate)
• Mannheim (Baden-Württemberg)
It will soon be possible to take part in further education in community colleges at these locations:
• Braunschweig (Lower Saxony)
• Bad Segeberg district (Schleswig-Holstein)
• Teltow-Fläming (Brandenburg)
• Speyer (Rhineland-Palatinate)
• Stuttgart (Baden-Württemberg)
